Man in charge of Institute of Technology talks about new addition – Swindon Advertiser

Posted under Cibercommunity, Technology On By James Steward

After opening in November, the new Swindon and Wiltshire Institute of Technology aims to prepare young people for the world of work and provide the skills local employers need.
And the man hoping to help it to just that is Neil Brayshaw, 47, who is the interim managing director of the brand new educational facility in Swindon.
Speaking to Ian Mean, Business West’s Gloucestershire director, Neil explained the difference between an Institute of Technology (IOT) and further education.
“The big difference is that we are technical institutions that have been specifically designed to meet those employer needs,” he said.
“Further education colleges have a general curriculum offer from entry level right up to degree level—it is a broad base.
“That’s how we differentiate ourselves. We feel we can be more fleet of foot, adaptable, and meet employers’ needs.”

When asked how IOT’s can convince local parents that they are the right route for their children, Neil responded that he didn’t think it would be an issue specifically in the town.
“In Swindon, we have the advantage in that for many generations families have worked for companies like Great Western Railway, for instance. It has a tradition—there are generations that have worked in these sectors. I don’t think there is that stigma you might get in other areas.”
