The Westinghouse Bulldogs rolled past the Steel Valley Ironmen 26-7, clinching their first state championship berth in program history.
The Bulldogs delivered body blow after body blow—as they’ve done all season—until their opponents couldn’t hold pace any longer, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a comfortable victory. However, the win was much closer than the box score indicates.
Westinghouse trailed for much of the third quarter, and their chances looked bleak as they struggled to move the ball. Starting quarterback Keyshawn Morsillo, who rushed for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, recognized Westinghouse’s defense for their ability to keep the Bulldogs in the game as Steel Valley seemed poised for a knockout punch.
“I just wanna shout out the defense, defense played lights out. Defense is our motor. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Morsillo said. “Steel Valley [was] putting up [44] points a game, and we only let up 7 points this game…When we were down, I didn’t really feel worried…I [knew] the defense was going to hold it down.”
Facing a red zone fourth-and-long midway through the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs received a second wind courtesy of a Morsillo interception—one that the Steel Valley defender fumbled away after getting lit up on the return attempt.
“That hit, that was big! And I ain’t gonna lie… it was a wide open pass. Number 70 [Steel Valley’s Gregory Smith] just made a good play on the ball,” Morsillo said. “I was mad, but then I [saw] the hit and I got super hyped. Forget the interception, we’re back on offense!”
Bulldogs’ head coach Donta Green graduated from Westinghouse and said that he’s used the lessons he learned as a player—namely, how to deal with adversity—to motivate his team now.
“That’s the only way I know. That’s how I was coached, coming up, when I played for Westinghouse, when I played for IUP…always getting better, every single week,” Green said. “I guess it’s embedded in me, it’s how I was raised within the game, so I just pass it on to our guys.”
In the moments after the Bulldogs clinched their first PIAA State Championship game appearance in their school’s 105 year history, Morsillo could hardly speak.
“I’m so excited, it’s just a blessing to be here right now,” Morsillo said. “It just feels too good right now, I’m so happy.”
While Green gives his players time to revel after each win, he said he’d already moved on to the matchup with Southern Columbia.
“All I know is, I’ve got another week to work. That’s it,” Green said. “I don’t really have time to kind of sit back and fall asleep in the trophy room. We’ve still got work to do.”
